Great News from Sweden

Sweden’s renowned literary prize Augustpriset just nominated Sven Olov Karlsson’s “Brandvakten” (“The Fire Guard”), an impressive book about many kinds of wildfires, their various effects on the climate and our task to combat or prevent them, for non-fiction Book of the Year 2017. Prominent winners of this category in previous years have been Sverker Sörlin, Dick Harrison and Maja Hagerman. The nomination comes after Karlsson’s awarding of the Ivar Lo-Literary Prize 2018.

Karlsson and five other nominees are now in the running for the award. Below the motivation by the jury:

Based on the great forest fires in Västmanland, the author associates globally and locally, from the narrow economic perspective on the environment right up to nearby forest property and to living a small life. An intelligent report on the risks we have created.

Sven Olov Karlsson’s is no stranger to the August Prize – in 2013 his novel “Porslinfasaderna” was nominated for fiction Book of the Year. His 2015 collection of short stories “Västmanland” was nominated for Svenska Dagbladet’s as well as Vi’s Literary Prize.
